Why hiring a trainee could be the best move for your NSW business

In today’s challenging business environment, attracting and retaining skilled staff can be a difficult task. For many businesses across New South Wales, particularly SME’s, traineeships offer a practical and cost effective solution as an alternative to traditional staff recruitment processes. By bringing in a trainee you’re investing in someone who can grow with your business, adapt to your systems, and contribute meaningfully from the start.

Traineeships combine on the job experience with formal training, allowing new employees to develop the specific skills your business needs. This ensures that trainees are not only learning industry relevant knowledge but are also becoming familiar with your company’s culture and operations. The NSW Government provides various incentives and support programs to assist employers in hiring and training trainees, making it an even more attractive option for business.

Whether you’re looking to expand your team, address skill shortages, or invest in the future of your workforce, hiring a trainee can be a move that benefits your business in a range of different ways. Lets look at some of the benefits bringing a trainee into your organisation:

1. Develop people aligned with your business

Traineeships provide an opportunity to train new people to align with your business’s unique processes and culture, and they don’t bring any bad habits with them. Because they’re starting fresh, you can shape how they work from day one whether that’s how they use your systems, engage with customers, or approach teamwork. It’s a chance to build a confident, capable employee who learns your way of doing things, not someone else’s.

Trainees also tend to be more open to feedback and change, which makes them easier to coach and develop over time. With the right support, they can become valuable, long term contributors who genuinely understand your business from the ground up.

2. NSW Financial incentives and support for traineeships

Hiring a trainee isn’t just a smart move for building your workforce, it’s also financially supported by the NSW Government. To make it easier for businesses to bring on new talent, a range of incentives and funding options are available. Whether you’re a small business looking to grow or a larger organisation wanting to invest in fresh talent, these programs can significantly reduce the cost of training and employing a new team member.

The NSW Government offers incentives to support businesses in hiring trainees, more details provided below.

Payroll tax rebate

If you’re hiring a new entrant trainee in NSW, you may be eligible for a payroll tax rebate through the Apprentices and Trainees Payroll Tax Rebate program. This initiative allows you to claim back payroll tax paid on the trainee’s wages, helping reduce your overall employment costs.

Key details: Eligibility criteria
To qualify, your trainee must be a new entrant — that means they’ve worked with you for less than three months full-time (or less than 12 months part-time or casually) before starting their traineeship. They’ll also need to be employed under a formal training contract approved by Training Services NSW.

Claiming the rebate

You can choose to claim the rebate either monthly or annually when lodging your payroll tax returns. This flexibility helps you manage your cash flow while still benefiting from the rebate.

What you need to do

You’ll need to keep accurate records of wages paid to your eligible trainees to support your rebate claims. You can apply at any time during the financial year, there’s no need to wait until the end.

Fee-free training  – for the trainee

Under the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled program, many traineeships are offered fee-free, alleviating the financial burden on both employers and trainees. This initiative aims to encourage workforce development by removing the cost barrier associated with vocational education and training.

By hiring a trainee under this program, you gain the benefit of fully funded training without needing to pay course fees. You can focus on mentoring your trainee and integrating them into your team, knowing the formal training component is covered. It’s a cost-effective way to develop new staff and contribute to growing a skilled workforce across NSW.

3. Trainees bring fresh perspectives and adaptability

Trainees often come into your business with a fresh enthusiasm to get involved and learn, plus they’re usually more open to new ideas and new technologies, which makes them very adaptable, even in fast changing environments.

New team members often bring a fresh take on things. Sometimes a simple question from a trainee can spark a conversation that leads to better systems or smarter solutions.

Trainees tend to adjust quickly because they’re learning everything from the ground up. That flexibility makes them easy to work with and valuable in a dynamic workplace.

Many younger trainees are already confident with new digital tools, apps, and platforms. That can give your team an edge when adopting new systems or improving workflows.

Bringing in someone with a different perspective doesn’t just benefit them, it can also challenge your team (in a good way), shake up routines, and keep your business evolving.

4. Traineeships offer flexibility for businesses of all sizes

Traineeships aren’t just for large businesses, they can also benefit small and medium sized teams. Whether you’re running a small business or a well established local business, there’s support available to help you make it work. The system is designed to be flexible, so you can bring someone into the team in a way that fits your size, structure, and resources.

You don’t need a full HR department to bring a trainee into your business. Training program can be tailored to suit your needs, and both you and your trainee will be supported every step of the way. Group Training Organisations (GTOs) can take care of the admin and paperwork, so you can stay focused on running your business. At the same time, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), like our team here at ISM, will guide you through the training side of the traineeship, making the whole process simple and manageable.

No matter your business size, traineeships offer a practical, supported way to build your team and expand your business.

With government support, tailored training options, and the opportunity to guide a new team member from the ground up, traineeships offer long term value that extends far beyond filling a job role. Whether you’re looking to grow your business, strengthen your team, or simply bring in fresh talent without the financial pressure, now is a great time to explore what a traineeship could bring to your workplace. If you’re ready to take the next step or want help navigating the process, our team at ISM is here to support you. Book a time here to discuss your options and how to get started.
