Why traineeships are more important than ever
Australia is facing a serious shortage of skilled workers, especially in finance, business, and technology. According to the Future Skills Organisation’s “Building a Skilled Workforce” report, 51 key occupations are experiencing critical skill gaps. With one in five Australians working in these sectors, it’s never been more urgent for businesses to rethink how they hire and develop staff.
That’s where traineeships come in.
Traineeships offer a practical, cost-effective way to build a future-ready workforce. They combine formal, nationally recognised training with on the job experience, helping you bring in fresh talent while upskilling your team with the exact skills your business needs. Whether you’re a small business or a large organisation, a traineeship can be a powerful solution to long-term recruitment and retention challenges.
At ISM, we specialise in financial services traineeships and offer a range of qualifications that align directly with industry needs. With the backing of NSW Government incentives, hiring a trainee is more accessible than ever.
What is a traineeship?
A traineeship is a structured program that blends hands-on work with formal education, delivered through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) like ISM. It usually runs for 12–24 months and leads to a nationally recognised qualification such as a Certificate III or IV.
Traineeships are suitable for roles across a variety of sectors, including:
- Financial services
- Banking
- Business administration
- Technology
- Customer service and more
They’re ideal for employers who want to bring new talent into their team, embedding them into your business culture while ensuring they’re building relevant, up to date skills.
How traineeships compare with other programs
| Program | Duration | Formal Training | Qualification Earned | Paid Work | Government Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traineeship | 12–24 months | Yes (via an RTO) | Yes (Certificate or Diploma) | Yes | Yes |
| Internship | Varies (usually short-term) | No | No | Sometimes | No |
| Apprenticeship | Up to 4 years | Yes (trade-focused) | Yes (Trade Certificate) | Yes | Yes |
While internships offer temporary exposure and apprenticeships focus on trades, traineeships are best suited for business and professional roles, offering both structure and beneficial long term outcomes.

Absolutely! Traineeships are a fantastic way to gain nationally recognised qualifications while getting real, paid experience in the workforce. Whether you’re starting your career, changing industries, or returning to work, a traineeship helps you learn while you earn. It’s also a great option for employers to build a skilled team from the ground up.
Traineeships are open to a wide range of people — school leavers, career changers, and even mature-age workers. There’s no upper age limit. You can be employed full-time or part-time, and eligibility for government funding or fee-free training will depend on your residency status and prior qualifications. You can check eligibility criteria via your local apprenticeship centre or through Training Services NSW.
Yes, traineeships are paid positions. Trainees are considered employees and receive a wage under the relevant award or agreement. The rate will depend on their age, how long they’ve been in the role, and the level of the qualification.
Most traineeships in NSW last between 12 and 24 months. The length can vary depending on the qualification, whether the trainee is full time or part time, and how quickly the required competencies are achieved.
The main difference is the type of work involved. Apprenticeships are generally for skilled trades like plumbing, carpentry, or electrical, and can take up to four years to complete. Traineeships, on the other hand, are more common in business, finance, IT, and health, and are typically shorter, lasting 1–2 years. Both lead to nationally recognised qualifications and include paid, on-the-job training
Great choice, bringing a trainee into your team is a smart way to grow talent from the ground up and build skills tailored to your business. The process in NSW is structured and well supported, even if you’ve never done it before.
Here’s a quick step-by-step overview to get you started:
Choose the right role – Think about where a trainee could add value in your business. Roles in admin, finance and customer service are for traineeships.
Find the right qualification – Choose a nationally recognised course that fits the role. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO), like our team here at ISM, will help with this and deliver the formal training.
Select a training provider – Your RTO will also help develop a Training Plan and support both you and your trainee through the journey.
Sign a training contract – This agreement between you and the trainee formalises the traineeship and is lodged with Training Services NSW.
Start training – Provide on-the-job experience, supervision, and allow time for formal study. Your RTO and an Apprentice Network Provider will support you along the way.
The NSW Government provides a step-by-step guide for employers that outlines everything you need to know, including financial incentives and how to find help if needed.
It might sound like a lot, but you won’t be doing it alone, there’s guidance at every step to make sure it’s a smooth experience for both you and your trainee. Contact us here to get started.
Employers usually claim funding through their Apprenticeship Network Provider or via Training Services NSW. These organisations help guide you through the process, including lodging the correct forms and ensuring eligibility criteria are met. We help you set up your traineeship correctly and help you get in touch with Training Services NSW early in the process to make sure everything is set up correctly from the start.
